Photography Based Art

I have always loved painting and I would say that painters have had a more influential effect on me than photographers.
For years, I sought abstraction in traditional photography, taking closeup abstracted views or using infrared which gave a painterly effect. As I continue to explore the capabilities of Photoshop, I have become infatuated with the ability to actually paint a photograph. The thing that remains fascinating is that the "paint" is actually a series of photographs that are layered and brushed in to create the final image. In this way several images can be combined to create unique effects based on texture, color and tone. I don't know if they are photographs anymore, but I do feel they are photography based art. Here is "A Day at the Beach", a piece of work that makes extensive use of this technique.
